St Helens head coach Royce Simmons says all he wants is to win trophies and he remains focused despite speculation about his future.
“All I care about is winning the thing at the end of the year,” Simmons told press at Langtree Park.
There has been recent speculation linking Simmons to a move away from the club when his contract comes to an end at the conclusion of the current season, with Huddersfield coach Nathan Brown tipped as a successor.
“It doesn’t worry me (speculation). All I care about are my players and winning next week’s game. You’ve just got stay focused on those things.”
Simmons knows how close his team came to winning trophies last season, saying: “Last year we got to the Grand Final and, with a bit of luck, could have won it. We also got to the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup and there was nothing in that game, we could quite easily have won that too.
“I’m proud as punch to be at the club. If I’m here coaching next year, that’s super. If not, I’ve got a family and lot of things outside football I’ve got to weigh up before I decide whether I’m staying or going.”
Meanwhile Saints forward Chris Flannery announced plans to retire at the end of the current season and return to his native Australia.
Flannery, who turns 32 in June, joined the club back in 2007 from Sydney Roosters in the NRL.
