Knights Club News

Posted on February 22nd, 2012:

York City Knights Player Head Coach Chris Thorman has added Paul King to the squad for tomorrow night’s visit of the Swinton Lions, 8pm kick off at the Huntington Stadium. King missed Sundays win over Doncaster with a rib injury that has been troubling him for the past few weeks, but x-rays have shown that the injury has now healed and King is keen to make his competitive debut for the club. Thorman may also include George Elliott, who was 18th man on Sunday and Jon Gay who were both named in a 20 man squad at training last night. The remainder of the first team squad will all be in contention for Sundays match at home to Gateshead.

Turnstiles will open at 7pm and season ticket holders, Vice Presidents and match ticket holders can access Bar 13, via the information point through main reception, from 5:30pm. Vice Presidents who have booked a pre match meal should arrive no later than 5:45pm.

Season ticket holders and Vice Presidents can also bring a friend for just £10 using the relevant voucher from the back of your season ticket booklet. Also tickets/vouchers stating the original date (12th February 2012) will be valid tomorrow night.

Don’t forget to support the Squad Builder Fund by purchasing a pot of gold ticket and our match day magazine ‘York & Proud’ which includes the thoughts of Chris Thorman, Mick Ramsden, Ian Wilson and an interview with Knights star Adam Sullivan, amongst other things.

For further information contact the Knights office (01904 767404).

Mick Ramsden

Mick Ramsden

We won our first Northern Rail Cup game on Sunday at Doncaster by 29 -18 with a good first half performance that pretty much sealed the game for us. The second half, however, was patchy and the players started to drop off tackles which allowed Doncaster back into the game. Could this have been a case of taking the foot off the gas? Maybe so, but, but we can’t afford to do this as teams in the Championship will be stronger and we will need those all important “eighty minute” performances that we always strive to get from the team.

Nevertheless, we got the win and some players really shone at the Keepmoat Stadium. Ben Hellewell got through a mountain of work as did Jack Aldous and Ed Smith. James Ford is looking sharp this year and scored two good tries, one of which was almost a full length sprint after Doncaster spilled the ball near to our line. He was clocked at 11.4 seconds over 90 metres and finished it by saluting to a nearby camera who was working for the local Doncaster newspaper and probably just deleted the photo as soon as he ran off!

Matty Garside was unstoppable at times with his weaving runs and he deserved his man of the match award in the York Press. Waine Pryce was also a handful and got us on the front foot a number of times. When forwards see a winger coming in field or scooting from acting half they normally look for the big shot but you won’t see Waine suffer many of those, he’s lightning just before contact and he’ll punch between them on most occasions for a quick play-the-ball. He picked up a slight ankle injury but should be okay to face Swinton tomorrow night.

There’s every chance that Paul King will be playing tomorrow night against Swinton, having excluding him from last week’s team at Doncaster. We just needed to be more sure that his injury has healed enough before selecting him and the results from his latest x-rays were much better. He was very disappointed to be left out last week but we were only doing what we thought was best for his health…and at the end of the day we need him to be fit for the rest of the season rather than bringing him back too early.

Lastly, a big thanks to our travelling army at Doncaster, and look forward to seeing you all again tomorrow night.

Cheers

Rammo

York City Knights are delighted to confirm that as a result of new amended drawings by Oakgate and and revised plans from City of York Council, along with other assurances regarding the scheme, the club has given its full backing to the Community Stadium project.

A meeting on Monday evening, involving the Knights Executive Chairman John Guildford, York City Football Club Chairman Jason McGill, City of York Athletics Club Chairman Neil Hunter and Project Manager Tim Atkins, was very positive and addressed the Knights main concerns, resulting in an agreement on the best way forward for the project been reached. The new proposal will have a 3G multi use facility adjacent to the Community Stadium along with other indoor sports facilities for community use.

The issue regarding training facilities for the Knights was discussed and three potential sites were identified that could all be suitable for the clubs needs, as well as providing community benefits, which is something that the club have always championed.

The Knights first team and reserve team matches will be played at the Community Stadium during the building of the stadium the Knights will play at Bootham Crescent at no financial loss to the club. The Knights will continue to be provided with, as a minimum, the same facilities as we currently have and will not be financially worse off.

Both York City Knights and York City Football Club have agreed to work together to ensure that the maximum income streams from the Community Stadium can be achieved to help the clubs prosper.

As a result of these discussions and assurances York City Knights are delighted to support the proposals and hope that the Knights supporters can join us by getting behind the scheme.

Click to join Lancealotto and support the YCK reserve grade

York City Knights are pleased to announce that following discussion with the Rugby Football League the club will run a Reserve Grade in 2012.

The club had previously taken the decision to disband the team this season, but after discussions between the Knights management and the coaching staff it has been decided that running the second grade team is the best thing for the club.

Commenting on the decision Knights General Manager Ian Wilson said,

“We believe that running a Reserve Grade team is important for the club. We have a large number of quality players who will be on the fringes of the team and it is important that these players get regular game time to help them improve further and put pressure on the players occupying those 17 places in the first team. We also have some very talented players in the Under 18’s Scholarship Squad, who are capable of playing at Reserve Grade Level, and it will be fantastic for their development too”

As the club have not budgeted to run a Reserve Grade 2012 we are going to be looking for the support of local business/individuals to help fund the team. Wilson added,

“We have already had support from Anytime Travel who have agreed to provide transport to away matches in 2012. Travel is one of our core costs so we are extremely grateful to them for this”

The club will also donate proceeds from Lancealotto (Club Lottery) to the Reserves so anyone who is not already a member is encouraged to join, for as little as £1 a week, and help support the Knights stars of the future. Click here to see all the ways you can join the Lancealotto

Anyone who can help support the Reserve Grade this season should contact Ian Wilson at the Knights office (01904 767404) or email ian@ycknights.co.uk. Season ticket holders and Vice Presidents will once again gain free entry to Reserve Grade matches so if you are able to support with a donation, no matter how big or small, it would be very much appreciated.

Anyone looking for travel requirements, for any occasion, should contact Steve at Anytime Travel on 07717 753314.

“That was the hardest thing I’ve ever done”!…Ben Dents comments after completing Chris Thormans’ cross fit workout last night in GLL gym. Chris was delighted by this comment, but he knew it was tough having done it himself in what ended up the best time of the night. With the poor weather conditions, the squad was broken into four groups, two training in the gyms at Hull and Gateshead and the other two together at York. The 20-25 minute workout involved five rounds of rowing and `bastardos’ which is an exercise incorporating press ups, squat thrusts, cleans and overhead presses with 15kg dumbells. As the rowing distance reduces, the reps on the bastardos increases and it gets really tough. Good times were achieved by Joe Hemmings, Ben Dent and Ed Smith, and they were all fairly close to Chris’ time of just over 20 minutes.

We have two new players joining us this week on dual-registration deals from Hull FC, Chris Green and Laurence Pearce, and having watched their clips and reading up about them we are looking forward to working with
them. Chris is the more established of the two in terms of rugby league development, and he is in Hulls squad this week for their trip to Catalans. Laurence, however, is relatively new to league having previously played rugby union but his stature and athleticism is very impressive. He’s well over six foot and one clip showed him going the
length of the field and no one got near him! There were some signs that he already possesses a good skill level too, with some quality passing and offloads.

The 10 year Knights souvenir brochure was a good read yesterday and brought all those memories back. One thing I had forgotten was that Stuart `Corgi’ Horton stepped in to coach us during the last few weeks of the York Wasps existence. It was a traumatic time for everyone but the way the Knights rose from the ashes was an incredible effort by
everyone and all those people should be proud of what they created.

The weather is not looking good (on Friday) and there are serious doubts over this weeks game. We’ve provisionally booked Burnholme School on Saturday afternoon in case it is cancelled and we’ve organised a session which will incorporate some conditioning and a few different games in the sports hall. I’d like to thank Paul Winterburn at Burnholme, and also GLL for their help with our training this week at very short notice.

So the first game is likely to be Doncaster away, which will be a tough one to start with. One thing to deal with will be the fact that we haven’t played away from home yet this year (in the pre-season friendlies), and the Keepmoat Stadium is a wider field than ours, so we will be adjusting the training area on the field next week to enable us to practice with additional width. The lads are raring to go after this weeks set back due to the weather and it’s going to be a hard job to pick the team. Difficult decisions will have to be made, but it’s a nice position to be in, and at least the players carrying injuries will have another week to fully recover.

Cheers

Rammo

Laurence Pearce

York City Knights are delighted to announce the signings of Hull FC back row duo Laurence Pearce (21) and Chris Green (22) on dual registrations for the 2012 season. Both players are part of the first team squad at the KC Stadium and will link up with the Knights this week. Green impressed for the Black and Whites against the Knights last month and spent the 2012 season on loan at Doncaster, while Pearce, who missed that game through injury, is a powerful athletic forward who, at 6ft 4, posses lot’s of pace and an offload game and was devastating in the Academy set up in 2011.

Commenting on the signings Knights Player Head Coach Chris Thorman said,

“I am delighted to welcome Chris and Lawrence to the club. They will bring real quality and provide more depth to the squad. Both have been training with the first team during pre season and I am really excited about what they can offer us”.

Hull FC director of rugby Shaun McRae added,

“We are delighted that Chris and Laurence have been dual registered with York and we feel they will really benefit from playing a higher standard of rugby with the Knights. York have recruited exceptionally well for the new season and boast a squad of undoubted talent. Working with coach Chris Thorman and the experienced players in the York team, many of whom will be known to Hull fans, will really help their development. Having played against York in a pre-season friendly, we know York will be a really good fit for them and the Knights have also had a chance to see what both players are capable of. It will be particularly beneficial for Laurence who is still learning the game, but will now have a chance to test his natural strength, size and skill in a tougher competition. As for Chris, he has been a consistent performer for the Under-20s and impressed in the pre-season friendly’s, so he will be using his opportunity at York to push for a place in the first team”.”

It gives supporters more options in terms of booking and payment and having a designated member of staff who can take calls out of office hours will make things much easier for supporters”.

Sporting Dinner

The Knights Independent Supporters Society (KISS), in partnership with the club, are holding a Sporting Dinner on Saturday 24th March 2012, 7:30pm start in Bar 13. The evening will be compared by David Kendall and the guest speaker is former St Helens, Leigh and Warrington legend Alex Murphy OBE. Tickets are priced at £25, or £250 for a table of 10, and all proceeds will go to the Knights Squad Builder Fund, which raises money for player recruitment/retention, and has been a huge success since its launch in August 2011. The evening will also include a four course dinner and fundraising activities.

The 24th March is a significant date for York Rugby League as it was the date of the 1984 Challenge Cup semi final at Elland Road when York were beaten 14 – 8 by Wigan, who were coached that day by Alex Murphy. It was also the date of the first meeting to resurrect York Rugby League in 2002, following the demise of the Wasps.

Tickets are available from the Knights Roland Court office or from Bar 13 on a match day (please ask for Gary Hall). Tickets can also be purchased over the phone by calling 01904 767404 or by sending a cheque, made payable to YCK Squad Builder Fund, to the Knights office; Roland Court, Huntington Road, York, YO32 9PW. We urge you to support this event and help raise money for something that is important to every Knights fan.

Mick Ramsden

The Hull friendly probably highlighted more areas to work on than any of the three games so far, both in attack and defence. We went relatively strong for this game with Paul King, Tommy Haughey and Chris Thorman playing their first games this year. We were very dis-jointed in defence and were broken down too many times and this was mainly down to players doing their own thing rather than working as a unit. That said, there were also a number of dead set one-on-one misses which really is unacceptable especially against a team of youngsters. It will take a bit of time to fix this area but we started work on it this week in training and we know the players will get there if they work hard and buy into the systems.

With the ball we just didn’t keep possession long enough to build any pressure and this was down to pushing the pass when we didn’t need to. We will score tries this year, we have strike players who will get over the line but the players have to understand that it’s a process to get there and we have to respect possession of the ball and complete our sets.

Paul King received the sponsors man of the match award having shown his undoubted class, particularly carrying the ball. He has loads of skill for a big man and the fact that he can deliver an effective pass on the charge opened up the Hull defence a couple of tiimes. It’s a shame he’s taken a knock to the ribs and will now be out for a few weeks because he will be good for us this year. I can see that he’s really committed to the club, and this shows as he’s been out on the training field this week offering a word in the ear to some of the players even though he can’t take part at the moment, and that’s important to us as a coaching team.

We are continuing to see consistently good performances from a number of players, the pick of those being Jack Aldous, Adam Sullivan and James Haynes and all three of these are also working hard in training which doesn’t go unnoticed by us.

So we are now looking at the Castleford game this week who are bringing a strong pack, with Nathan Massey and John Davies featuring, of whom we know a lot about. It will be a good test for us and we have to see improvements with this being our last friendly before the northern rail cup starts in two weeks. Key to this will be the link between Chris Thorman and Jordan Tansey, who are still working on building an understanding between them. This will obviously take a bit of time but potentially it could be one of the best half back partnerships in the league. Tansey showed some nice touches last week, he’s got an abundance of pace and skill and he can open up a defence so long as he has runners around him doing their jobs with good effect.

Finally, thanks to all our corporate sponsors who we had a nice meal with last night in Bar 13. Your support is vital to us, and we appreciate what you do.

Look forward to seeing you all this Sunday.
Cheers
Rammo
