Chorley Lynx 21 York City Knights 20
LHF Healthplan National League Division Two - 12 September 2004
Very rarely do games conjure up such a dramatic ending as the one that brought Chorley Lynx both points in the final LHF Healthplan game of the season, in what could be their last ever game. Leading by ten points with just seven minutes remaining the Knights looked good value for the win. But two tries in the left hand corner by winger Eddie Kilgannon, the second converted from right on the touchline by Brian Capewell, brought the Lynx level on points with a little over three minutes left on the clock.

Lee Jackson, Danny Brough and Darren Callaghan halt an opponent
A draw still looked the most likely outcome until Capewell, finding himself in space in midfield just inside his own half, and with literally seconds left on the clock, let fly with one of the best drop goals supporters are ever likely to see, to spark jubilant celebrations between the home players and their supporters.

Austin Buchanan races over for the Knights opening try
Up until those final few minutes the Knights had always looked in charge without ever pulling away sufficiently to leave the game safe. Austin Buchanan's eighteenth minute try opened the scoring and a Danny Brough penalty followed shortly after. Chris Langley and Jim Elston both added first half tries, and Danny Brough's conversion of the latter helped open up a sixteen point lead and the Knights appeared to be in full control.

Jim Elston dives over to score the Knights third
However, Martin Roden's try from close range with a minute of the first half remaining, goaled by Capewell, reduced the deficit to just ten points at the break, and this was chipped away further just two minutes into the second half when a perfectly judged kick to the corner was taken by winger Danny Arnold on the full allowing him to dive over and score.

John Smith powers forward at Victory Park
The Knights responded with a try from Albert Talipeau to restore the ten point cushion, which could have been extended further had Mark Cain's relatively straight forward penalty attempt, taken while Danny Brough was in the sin bin, not struck the right hand upright. As it turned out the ten point cushion proved not to be enough as Kilgannon and Capewell struck late to seal the points on a day that will live long in the memories of the home faithful.
